Dr C Mukherjee

Physics Teacher

I have had a circuitous route to becoming a Physics teacher. I am from London and studied an MSci in Physics at Imperial College London before doing a DPhil (PhD) at Oxford University on “quantum frustration”. I then worked for 10 years in industry, living in Texas, Norway and California, on projects including strategic research on climate change adaptation and minimizing environmental risks in oil refineries.

I found I was enjoying mentoring new engineers and running training courses more than simulation models and made a happy career change to become a high school teacher. I taught Physics, Maths and Environmental Science for 5 years at a student-centred independent school in San Francisco, also becoming Science Department Chair. I loved seeing students gain confidence and realise that they could actively “do science” through hands-on activities and open-ended design projects. I am also passionate about experiential and outdoor education and enjoyed taking students on backpacking and ecology field trips to the Mojave Desert, Galapagos Islands and the Northern Californian wilderness.

After 12 years abroad, I moved back to England in the summer of 2021 to be closer to family and I am excited to have started teaching at St Joseph’s College in September 2021.
