After 43 years of outstanding service, St Joseph’s College has said a fond and heartfelt farewell to its longest-serving member of staff, Mrs Mandy Kesel. As Director of the Arts and Head of Music, Mrs Kesel has been at the heart of the College community for over four decades, inspiring generations with her passion, energy and unwavering belief in the power of music.
Since joining in the early 1980s, she has led choirs, orchestras, ensembles and international tours, created a vibrant and inclusive musical culture, and played a pivotal role in transforming the College into a recognised Centre of Excellence. Her vision helped shape a state-of-the-art Music Centre and a prestigious partnership with the London Mozart Players – ensuring world-class opportunities for pupils of all abilities.
This summer, as part of the College’s 130th anniversary celebrations, over 200 former pupils, staff and parents returned to the College for a special Alumni reunion. With Mrs Kesel as guest of honour, the event featured a one-off performance by a scratch choir made up of alumni and former colleagues – a moving tribute and chance for the community to sing together one last time under her direction.
She also hosted her final farewell Gala Concert – an emotional and joyous evening that celebrated her legacy through performances from past and current students plus staff. Most recently, she returned to the stage as keynote speaker at the College’s Prize Giving Ceremony, reflecting on her 43-year journey at St Joseph’s and the joy of shaping so many lives through music.
A parent summed it up perfectly: “Mrs Kesel is always the soul of the school, because she brings everyone together with music.”
Now, as she heads into a well-earned retirement – which will, fittingly, be filled with more music – the entire St Joseph’s community says thank you.
Thank you, Mrs Kesel, for everything you have given. Your legacy will continue to sing through the College for years to come.
