Meet the Staff

Director of HaLE (Humanities and Language Enrichment), Head of Geography

Dr S West

After 22 years working in the state education system, I felt it was time for a change. I started at St Joseph’s College in 2018 and have never looked back. A graduate of the University of Plymouth with an undergraduate BSc degree in Geography and a PhD in Quaternary Science, I completed my PGCE in Secondary Geography in 1998 and embarked on a fantastic career teaching.

I love working in a small, close-knit community like St. Joseph’s where I get to know most students and all the staff. I enjoy the drive the students have in my subject and the true passion and willingness to learn they show – it makes my job much easier and so much more rewarding.

I have responsibility for the Young Enterprise programme in the College and witness two student company teams each year move through the stages in the start-up and running of their organisation selling products that they have researched, sourced, manufactured and marketed.

I am also the Director of HaLE (Humanities and Languages Enrichment). This post challenges me to further develop the co-curricular offer made to students across the College and I am excited at the how the provision in and between these subject areas will develop in the future, ably supported by my excellent colleagues.

Work keeps me very busy, but to relax and unwind I find solace in the rural lanes and byways of Berkshire and neighbouring counties. I am an avid and committed member of my local cycling club, Newbury Velo and ride my bike(s) as often as I can – my long standing personal challenge is to ride more than I drive in a year.
