130th Celebration Day Success

08.07.2025

The sun shone brightly on Sunday as the College welcomed back over 200 alumni, former staff, governors and friends of the College for its much-anticipated 130th anniversary celebration.

The day began on a particularly emotional note, with a scratch choir made up of more than 50 enthusiastic Old Broad Oakians. They reunited for a final performance under the baton of Mrs. Kesel, who is set to retire this week after an incredible 43 years of service to the College. With just 30 minutes of rehearsal, the choir took to the stage and delivered a beautiful and moving performance that stirred memories and emotions alike. Many in the audience were visibly moved – a fitting tribute to a beloved teacher whose influence has spanned generations.

Throughout the afternoon, guests enjoyed a vibrant mix of nostalgia and celebration. Afternoon tea was served alongside old penny sweet bags and a specially crafted Broad Oak mocktail – the first in the college’s history. Guests also had the opportunity to purchase a print of the recently commissioned painting of Broad Oak, created in honour of the milestone.

College tours proved especially popular, with visitors exploring the site, including the library, which once served as the original College chapel. An archive exhibit on display offered a rich look into Broad Oak’s storied past, sparking memories and lively conversations.

The College hall echoed with laughter and shared anecdotes as alumni swapped tales from their school days, from the humorous to the heartfelt, reminding everyone of the powerful bonds formed within these historic walls.

As the academic year draws to a close, the 130th celebration stood out as a perfect moment of reflection, joy and gratitude. It was a day not just to honour the Colleges rich heritage, but to celebrate the enduring community that continues to shape its legacy.

“It was the perfect way to mark the end of the year and to recognise all those who have been, and continue to be, part of our story,”  Donna Burton, Alumni and Marketing Officer

“What a Triumph! Thank you for an absolutely wonderful afternoon, and complete joy. The Scratch Choir, under Mrs Kesel’s incredible direction, was sublime. Speeches, food, young tour guides – just lovely.” OBO Linda Heneghan
