Head of Sixth Form

Mrs A Maxwell

The greatest advice given to me as a student was to go and study something that I truly loved at university. As such, I spent three wonderful years studying Archaeology and Anthropology, at Downing College, University of Cambridge. Here I developed a real passion for Ancient History and the Classical world. Upon graduation, a chance encounter led to the offer of a voluntary position in Varanasi, India, working with the Sisters of Our Lady of Providence. I spent many happy months as a nanny to 10 girls between the ages of 3 and 6, outside school hours, and teaching in the local school during the day. It was here that I developed my true love of teaching. Upon returning to the UK, I took up a place at Southampton University to complete my teacher training degree in History.

Since then, I have worked in a number of schools in the South, mainly teaching History, Classical Civilisation and RE, and have spent almost my entire career involved in the pastoral care of Sixth Formers, having worked in roles such as Head of Year 12, Head of Year 13 and as a Deputy Head. I love that this is the time when students begin taking more ownership of their own futures, continue developing their opinions and sense of justice and are enthused about taking their own place, as adults, in the world. Therefore, to undertake the role of Head of Sixth Form here at St Joseph’s is an absolute privilege and I look forward to seeing our young people flourish and thrive, as they progress through their education in such a wonderful school community.

My spare time is currently taken up with my two little boys at home and I love to plan our own little adventures to go on. Designing treasure hunts to take them on at the weekend is currently one of my favourite things to do.
