Years 1 – 6

Education in the Junior part of the Prep school extends far beyond exam results, encompassing much more than the basics of reading, writing, and arithmetic. We provide a dynamic interplay between curiosity and knowledge, designed to bring out the very best in every child. We empower our pupils to ask meaningful questions and nurture a passion for understanding not just the ‘what,’ but also the ‘how’ and ‘why.’

Years 1 and 2 Curriculum

In Years 1 and 2, students build on the strong foundation established in Pre Reception and Reception, fostering greater independence both personally and academically. Our dedicated teachers craft engaging and stimulating lessons that encourage hands-on problem-solving and exploration. Pupils benefit from specialised instruction in PE, Music, and French while gaining early exposure to the Senior School’s art studios, science laboratories and ICT suites.

English and Mathematics Development

Students are introduced to a diverse array of literary genres, with teachers sharing their passion for the enchantment of reading. Spelling and grammar rules are systematically taught, and phonic knowledge is reinforced to ensure a solid linguistic foundation. In Mathematics, pupils develop excellent mental arithmetic skills and learn to apply mathematical concepts to real-world problem-solving. They are encouraged to explore various methods, employ strategies, and articulate their reasoning clearly. By the end of Year 2, students are well-prepared to embrace the challenges of the Junior Department.

Years 3 – 6 Curriculum

Pupils in Years 3 to 6 benefit from a dynamic and engaging curriculum that combines instruction from their form tutors with lessons delivered by subject specialists. Small class sizes create a supportive and nurturing environment, allowing every child to receive individualised encouragement and challenges.

Our curriculum is based on the National Curriculum but is not constrained by it. This flexibility allows us to teach a broad and enriched program that equips pupils with the knowledge, skills, and resilience needed to transition seamlessly into senior school. Emphasis is placed on fostering a strong work ethic and a genuine love of learning, rather than solely focusing on preparing for tests.

A highlight of the Years 3 to 6 experience is the wide array of educational trips, including residential experiences, that complement and enhance classroom learning. These excursions provide pupils with opportunities to engage with the curriculum in real-world contexts, further developing their curiosity, confidence, and independence.
