Year 8 student shines on the national stage
We’re incredibly proud to celebrate Carson in Year 8, who has just won gold at the 2025 British Youth Championships in the Boys’ U-14 Épée event!
Competing against 78 of the UK’s top young fencers, Carson showed remarkable skill, focus and composure to claim the top spot at one of the most prestigious youth fencing tournaments in the country.
But this victory is more than just one great result—it’s the latest chapter in a story that began over a decade ago.
Where it all began…
Carson first picked up a sword at just four years old in Hong Kong. Guided by Leung Ka Ming, a former Olympic épée fencer, he started with foil and quickly developed strong fundamentals—movement, precision and discipline. He once described it as feeling “like a Jedi on the piste.”
As Carson got older, fencing became a big part of his life. He began entering 10 to 15 competitions a year, both as an individual and as part of a team. The journey wasn’t always smooth—there were setbacks and tough days—but the camaraderie of his club kept him going. The friendships he built through fencing added an extra layer of enjoyment, making the sport more than just a competition.
A turning point
Just before COVID-19 hit, Carson made the switch to Épée. Even through lockdowns and training disruptions, he stayed committed. At age 11, he placed 8th out of over 200 competitors at the Hong Kong Inter-Primary Boys Open Épée, showing early signs of the champion he’d become.
Then, after moving to the UK, he entered his first British competition—the England Youth Championship 2023—and won it. Carson continuously gains valuable experience by competing in different tournaments.
Today, Carson trains at Luso International Fencing Club in Maidenhead, attending three sessions a week and competing regularly across the country. After each event, he works meticulously with his coaches to review his performances, analysing each competition to refine strategies, footwork and attack plans for the next challenge.
Carson’s success is a reflection of his hard work, perseverance and passion, and we couldn’t be prouder. He’s not only a brilliant athlete but also a fantastic representative of our school community.
Congratulations, Carson!
