Year 7 student, Isabella, has made waves for marine wildlife by swimming 3km to raise over £1,000 for the Marine Conservation Society—and earned a personal video message from explorer Steve Backshall while he was on expedition in the Arctic.
Inspired by conservation heroes like David Attenborough and Steve Backshall, Isabella, a passionate swimmer and environmentalist, organised a group charity swim with 25 members of Henley Swimming Club at Queen Anne’s School in Caversham. She’s been training with the club for 18 months and took it upon herself to plan and promote the event.
“I’ve always been really passionate about wildlife and marine animals especially,” said Isabella. “I felt I wanted to do something else so I searched some charities and found the Marine Conservation Society, which I felt was a really good fit because I love marine wildlife and I’ve always really loved swimming.”
Her swim was carefully chosen—3km was “enough to push me outside of my comfort zone without being too challenging,” she said.
Her incredible initiative caught the attention of Steve Backshall, who sent a surprise video message praising her efforts: “To swim that far for conservation is incredible. Well done Isabella!”
