St Joseph’s College Shines at F1 in Schools Regional Competition

31.01.2025

St Joseph’s College once again made waves at the F1 in Schools Regional Competition, with eight teams competing—five from Prep and three from the Senior School, where all competitors were girls for the first time ever!

The challenge?

To design and manufacture a model race car. Prep teams crafted theirs from card, while the Senior School teams tackled the CAD-designed, 3D-printed challenge with impressive dedication. Our in-house 3D printer (donated by funds raised from our amazing Parents Association), gave teams extra testing time, allowing them to refine their nose designs with clay models.

But racing isn’t without its bumps! The night before the event, we realised our Senior cars lacked a crucial safety groove—but with teamwork, tech, and a last-minute effort from teachers and pupils, all three cars were modified just in time. Then, on the morning of the race, another hurdle: tight cartridge chambers from 3D printing. Mr. Ozanne came to the rescue, filing them down just in time for scrutineering—10 minutes before the deadline!

The results:

All the drama was worth it. Team Velocita won Best Engineered Car and the Future Star Award, securing an invite to next year’s category leading to Nationals. Team Lightning McQueenz took home Fastest Car, while Lightspeed earned Best Team Identity. But the biggest win? Lightning Lions were crowned Regional Champions!

For the fifth year in a row, St Joe’s heads to Nationals—because when it comes to F1 in Schools, St Joe’s rules the track!
