Reading Youth Council

21.03.2024

It was a momentous day today as we hosted the Reading Youth Council Conference 2024! We were thrilled to welcome students from Kendrick, Kings Academy Prospect, Highdown, and Blessed Hugh Farringdon. They joined our own students in a series of impactful discussions and presentations that exemplify the power of youth engagement in our community.

The day began with warm welcomes from notable figures including The Right Honourable Sir Alok Sharma KCMG MP, Member of Parliament for Reading West, and Councillor Tony Page, Mayor of Reading. Each emphasised the importance of the RYC’s role in representing the voices of Reading’s youth to decision-makers, thereby shaping the future of our local community and beyond.

The Reading Youth Council conference highlighted several key campaigns and projects that the RYC is passionately working on. A standout was the Environmental Campaign led by Mahnoor Mehr. This engaged participants in a Model United Nations (MUN) format, sparking deep debate and negotiation on climate change impacts and solutions. Furthermore, the VR Workshop sponsored by our platinum sponsor Henley Business School and the University of Reading, led by Dr. Fabio Goncalves De Oliveira, showcased innovative ways to approach learning and activism.

Additionally, Dr. Amal Ahmadi presented the Social Enterprise Programme, guiding attendees through interactive projects aimed at tackling local challenges. These initiatives not only highlight the RYC’s commitment to pressing global and local issues but also their dedication to empowering young people with the skills and platforms to make a real difference.

Reading Youth Council 2024 Conference was organised by Maximilian in Year 10. Well done Maximilian.
